Juvenile Crimes

Don't Face Your Charges Alone

New York Juvenile Crime Lawyer

Being charged with a crime as a juvenile is a serious matter that can have lasting effects on your life. In addition to being criminalized at a young age, a criminal conviction can also make it difficult to get a job or attend college in the future. At Maryam Jahedi Law Firm P.C., our New York juvenile crime lawyer has handled many juvenile cases and can help you fight for the best possible outcome in yours.

What Are the Penalties for Juvenile Crimes?

The penalties for juvenile crimes can vary depending on the specific crime, the age of the juvenile when the crime was committed, and the juvenile's prior record. Generally, the younger the defendant is, the less severe the penalties will be.

Some common penalties for juvenile crimes include:

  • Fines

  • Community service

  • Probation

  • Counseling

  • Restitution

  • Jail time

The most important thing you can do if your child is facing charges as a juvenile is to hire an attorney with experience in juvenile criminal law. Maryam Jahedi Law Firm P.C. has years of experience and can help you fight the charges and protect your child's future.

What Is the Minimum Age for Criminal Responsibility in New York?

In a historic move, New York State raised the age of criminal responsibility to 18 years on April 10, 2017. This reform ensures that young people who commit non-violent crimes receive appropriate intervention and evidence-based treatment. The changes were implemented in two stages, affecting 16-year-olds from October 1, 2018, and 17-year-olds from October 1, 2019.

Adolescent Offenders (AO)

The "Raise the Age" legislation introduced the concept of Adolescent Offenders (AO), comprising 16- and 17-year-olds accused of felony-level crimes. Their cases are now heard in the Youth Part of Criminal Court, emphasizing rehabilitation.

No More Adult Facilities

To provide a more supportive environment, young offenders in this age group are no longer housed in adult facilities or jails. Instead, they are placed in specialized juvenile detention facilities certified by the State Office of Children and Family Services, in collaboration with the State Commission of Correction.

Sealing of Criminal Records

After ten crime-free years post-sentence, individuals have the opportunity to apply for the sealing of previous criminal convictions. However, certain serious felonies disqualify individuals from this benefit.

These reforms reflect New York's commitment to a more humane and rehabilitative approach to juvenile justice, producing better outcomes for young offenders.

What Are the Benefits of Hiring a Juvenile Crime Lawyer?

If your child, nephew, niece, or other youth is facing criminal charges as a juvenile, you may be wondering whether you should hire a lawyer. While you may not be required to hire a lawyer, it is in their best interest to do so. A lawyer can help you navigate the legal system and can help you avoid harsh penalties and potentially avoid the stigma that comes with juvenile criminal convictions.
